Color-blocking a rental without losing the deposit

You can’t paint the walls. You can absolutely paint the room — with furniture, textiles and one very brave lamp.

Start with the biggest object

If the walls are landlord white, your sofa is the wall. Pick one large piece in a saturated color — oxblood, moss, cobalt — and let it set the temperature of the room. Everything else either agrees with it or argues on purpose.

Then add a second color at a smaller scale: a butter-yellow lamp, a tomato side table, a stack of books with the right spines facing out. Two strong colors and a lot of white reads as confident. Five strong colors reads as a children’s museum.

Rugs are removable walls

A big rug is the most powerful color-block you can roll up and take with you. Use it to define a room inside the room — a reading corner, a dining zone — and anchor it with something heavy on at least two edges.

When you move out, everything leaves with you. The landlord gets their white walls back, and you keep the room you actually wanted.
